about mark von roy

*disclaimer - the writer of this text made the editorial decision to write in third person, as the continuous use of the words "I" and "me" rubbed the writer all sorts of the wrong way. So yes, I: mark von roy, am writing about myself in third person for the moment, because that feels better to me.

summary

Mark von Roy is a multifaceted creative professional known for his diverse roles in outdoor sports media, focusing on authentic structured creativity. Half kiwi and half german, Mark has spent significant time living in Munich, Innsbruck, Auckland and Wānaka: thus he can write and speak English & German fluently.

He has over a decade of experience in media production & brand development, fulfilling various roles in creative and production—from strategy, pre-production & production, to post-production, finishing, distribution and communication— and thus he has a deep understanding of "the process" and the nuances, as well as the complexities and potential simple solutions.

philosophy

Studying Psychology and Philosophy many moons ago at the University of Otago, Mark still retains an interest in understanding the human condition and in turn representing it authentically in his work through a lens of existentialism and a sprinkling of absurdity.

professionally

Professionally, Mark has undertaken various roles, including Director, Producer, Brand Creative, Writer, HR Director (Company of 20+ people), Editor-in-Chief, Video Editor, Filmer & Head of Media Production (Team size between 6 - 20+ filmers & editors).

He is interested in a wide array of creative endeavours, while remaining committed to authenticity, honesty and creative structure—summed up in a pseudo mantra of "zero bullshit and maximum creative efficiency, or something like that". Recently, Mark has decided to give freelancing a go, which is why you are reading this text.

originally

Freeskiing was Mark's gateway to the creative media landscape; first as a not-very-succesful professional skier—filming and editing his own "shitty go-pro edits", and eventually as a semi-professional freeski filmer and editor as well as editor in chief of europe's premier freeski magazine called Downdays. This passion all culminated in becoming the head of media production and quasi creative director for the Nines

distillery

During this time, Mark joined the Distillery in 2012—a creative media and events agency based in Innsbruck—becoming a shareholder, HR Director and Creative Director a number of years later. He credits the process of discovering, nurturing and developing the talents of employees at Distillery as the most fulfilling work to date. During his time at the Distillery, Mark had the opportunity to not only work with some of the best sports filmmakers in Europe, but also to film and interview many sports icons.

sportingly

Sports and participation in them—regardless of ability—are important facets to life according to Mark. Having officially and completely retired from skiing, Mark now tries to hone his skills in surfing and disc golfing. He has participated in professional disc golf events, in competitions sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association. (psst: he is not as good at disc golfing as this sounds or he wishes to be). He is also a big fan of playing football.

culturally

Music and "the arts" (define as you wish), are vital aspect to a fulfilled life (according to Mark). He can't draw to save himself (but loves a wee doodle session). He can't really play any music, but will plinker away on the piano or the guitar until someone pleads him to stop. So he is more of a listener, watcher and curator when it comes to music and art, although he loves creating the basic soundscape for short videos and documentaries.

family

Beyond his professional pursuits, Mark is a family man. He and his partner have a daughter named Ayla Luna, born in late 2022 and a son name Mio Solar born late 2024. They both appear to be turning into lovely little humans. The family recently relocated to Wānaka, New Zealand, embracing the community and lifestyle it offers.

flashmodernally

Through his company, Flashmodern, Mark continues to explore and innovate across various creative fields, embodying a philosophy that celebrates the absurd and unexpected while finding art in everyday chaos.

Tangible Skills

If you have read this far, you may still be asking yourself, "what can Mark actually do". Here a short summary of hard & soft skills.
